The 2016-17 basketball season begins a new chapter for the New Berlin Pretzels.
With an energetic new head coach and a 6'5" big bodied impact transfer, it's a new beginning for the small town program.
Blake Lucas takes over a program that finished last season with a record of 8 wins and 20 loses. Coach Lucas comes in with expectations to compete at a high level on a nightly basis in what looks to be a deep and balanced Sangamo Conference. "We had a really nice summer in terms of developing skills and working on fundamentals of the game. We spent a lot of time in the gym getting to know one another, and learning the philosophy of the new system," says Lucas.
The new system will have a foundation of defense. "Defense and rebounding will be our core. If we can learn how to get down and guard as a unit, I feel like we will give ourselves a chance to compete on any given night," says Lucas.
Coach Lucas enters the season with optimism and excitement: "These kids out here are outstanding young men. As a staff, we have been extremely pleased with their attitudes and willingness to learn and grow. They have high expectations for themselves and look to change the culture of the program."
New Berlin doesn't have any state titles. The community is content and proud if a New Berlin Turkey Tourney or Waverly tourney title or a regional title comes their way. They last won a regional in 2013. Prior to that it was 1995.
They will open the season against Springfield Lutheran High School, who also has a new coach, on Monday, November 21st in the 2016 Gene Bergschneider Turkey Tournament (Nov 21-26) hosted by New Berlin at the Pretzel Dome.
After the turkey tourney, New Berlin will play four games (3 home, 1 away) then head to the Waverly Holiday Tournament during the Christmas break (Dec 27-29). They last won the prestigious small town tourney in 2000. Their best finish since the title was a fourth place finish in 2011.
After Waverly, they play two away games then head to another tourney, the Sangamon County Tournament at Lincoln Land CC (Jan 9-14); a tourney they have not won since 1966. After county, they play out the season and head into regionals.
The Turkey tourney will be the next chapter in the story of New Berlin basketball, which is a great story.
